The problem with SLE, as with a lot of autoimmune diseases, is that what actually causes the body's immune system to attack itself is currently unknown. Therefore, current management strategies revolve around the treatment of symptoms, whilst a cure remains elusive.
SLE seems to be the result of interplay between both genetic and environmental risk factors. Although certain alleles of genes (such as some Class I and Class II molecules of the Major Histocompatibility Complex - MHC) appear to increase the risk of developing the disease, no one polymorphism in particular can be attributed to causing disease. This makes it unlikely that gene therapy will, at this stage anyway, be an appropriate course of action to treat or cure SLE.
Similarly, stem cells are useful in the regeneration of damaged tissue etc, however, the major cause of symptoms in SLE is from the inflammatory response caused by the immune reaction and by the deposition of antibody complexes around the body.
At this point, it is difficult to say where a cure will come from, though what is definite is that first the cause of disease must be identified. Based on what is known already, we can hypothesise that a cure will come from somehow altering the immune response to avoid this self-reactivity.
