The Strange World of Small Things

Overview

Recommended Year Level: Year 8                                                                                                                                                      Required Knowledge: Little                                                                                                                                                                     Duration: 3 x 50 minute lessons

This activity will provide students with the opportunity to:

  • develop a sense of size and scale: macro > micro > nano
  • explore objects at different levels (such as bacteria, viruses, cells, genes, DNA, molecules, atoms) – macro, micro and nano
  • explore objects using stereo and electron microscopes.

The final exercise provides a list of possible problems associated with observing and measuring that students may like to investigate. The rubric provided in Activity 7 is a useful framework to support their efforts.
