Carbon Nanotubes

Overview

Recommended Year Level: Year 10                                                                                                                                                          Required Knowledge: Little                                                                                                                                                                          Duration: 5 x 50 minute lessons

This stream of the Performance Materials module utilises an examination of allotropes of carbon to introduce the concept of covalent bonds, to explore the role of molecular characteristics in determining material properties, and to have a ‘first look’ at nanotechnology. Students learn about the different allotropes of carbon, their importance and uses. The potential uses of carbon nanotubes are explored in light of their metal-like properties.
